How to Trade the VIX | Quick Take

In this [How to Trade the VIX | Quick Take] video , we will be discussing the various ETFs that can be used to trade volatility | the VIX in the stock market. Recently, @RT posed the question of what one can trade VIX with, specifically mentioning SVXY and UVXY. Well, we have a number of ETFs available in our ETF Google sheet for trading volatility | the VIX, including UVXY, SVXY, VXX, and SVIX. We also have a dividend payer on volatility, which is SVOL, with dividend payment information available on our Dividend Payers Google sheet.

For shorter term swings and scalps, we typically use UVXY long and SVXY short. This is one of our favorite trades as it allows us to catch a pop and then short the VIX back down, as it naturally retraces. We also use UVXY long to long big futures, which are VIX futures based, and s SVXY short pops in the VIX. @TheKrow mentions using UVIX, but there are a number of other ETFs available for trading the VIX, including VXX. It’s important to look at the composition and the futures they are based on, as well as the risk-reward profile before deciding which one to trade.

How To See Futures Contracts Prices

In this [How To See Futures Contracts Prices] video , we will be discussing the impetus for me to start looking for a way to see futures or future contracts on various commodities. Specifically, we will be looking at wheat and how its WEAT ETF on Wheat Futures is comprised of contracts for May, July, and December, making up about 30% of the December contract. As I was researching, I came across this helpful site called BarChart Futures, which allows you to see the contracts for various months. I have included the link in the video’s description and on our homepage at https://beachbmtrading.com/ for your convenience.

On the BarChart Futures site, you can see an overview of all the different futures contracts for various industries, including 10-year treasuries, major commodities like oil, natural gas, gold, and silver, as well as foreign currencies and even Bitcoin. This is not just limited to commodities, so it is a useful tool for investors of various interests.

We will be focusing on the wheat contracts, specifically the May, July, and December contracts. As we can see, all three of these were trending up, explaining the recent bounce back of the WEAT ETF.

VIX Futures Historical Prices

In this [VIX Futures Historical Prices] video , we take a closer look at the VIX term structure and analyze the recent spike in volatility due to the missile strikes in Russia from Ukraine. We see that although there was an initial increase in volatility, it quickly declined back to 16, indicating a contango in the VIX term structure. Using our VIX term structure tool on our homepage, we can also see that the current VIX is significantly below the VIX Futures, suggesting that the VIX is expected to rise in the future.

One interesting feature of our VIX Futures term structure tool is that it allows us to look at historical prices, giving us a better understanding of current trends and volatility. We can see that the current Futures are declining as we move further out, but if we add in the current day, we can see how it compares to the term structure. This can be valuable information for traders of VIX Futures and ETFs.

What is the SKEW Index?

Welcome to today’s short [What is the SKEW Index?] video ! Have you heard of the skew index? If not, don’t worry, I’m here to explain it to you. The skew index is a measurement of investor sentiment in market risk. It basically shows the amount of fear or uncertainty in the stock market. This index was created by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and is based on the price of out-of-the-money options for the S&P 500.

So why should you care about this index? Well, the skew index can be a useful tool for investors as it gives them an idea of market sentiment. If the index is above 100, it indicates that investors are worried about potential market crashes. By keeping an eye on the skew index, investors can make more informed decisions about their investments.

The good news is that you can easily track the skew index online and it is updated every 15 minutes during market hours. So the next time you’re thinking of making an investment, make sure to check the skew index first.
